My interest in the sociocultural history of reproduced classical music began with performing the Bach transcriptions of Leopold Stokowski during my years training as a violist. Through understanding his eminent role in the development of music recording in USA, I became fascinated by the impact of phonographic and radio technologies on music and society in the early twentieth century.
Introduced to the field of American studies through a module in consumer culture at University of Hong Kong, I pursued my passion in music reproduction research across the disciplines of musicology and regional studies. My undergraduate-level research culminated into an independent study on the democratisation of classical music through American radio broadcasts in the 1930s.
The advanced studies in record creation and management, material culture, and heritage curation I gained through postgraduate archivist training at University of Glasgow – coupled with practical work in cataloguing phonographs and video cassettes – inspired me with unparalleled empirical experiences. Furthermore, my year abroad experience in Denmark has drawn my interest to the underexplored parts of Scandinavian music phonographic culture.
Currently I am cataloguing a collection of about 1,000 gramophone records donated by Palette Club Glasgow to Glasgow University Library. I also volunteer with Janey Buchan Political Song Collection, cataloguing the business papers deposited by the Workers' Music Association, as well as collecting the protest songs from Hongkong. Previously, I interned at Scottish Ballet and HKU Museum & Art Gallery (Kinsey African American Art & History Collection).
I am on track to completing an MSc Information Management & Preservation with Merit at University of Glasgow (2020), and obtained my BA (2:1) Music and American Studies from University of Hong Kong (2017).
